Psalm 8

Read Psalm 8

We find, know, and grow into whom God has made us to be as we live in and from the perspective of all the God is.

God created us. Our self-centeredness sometimes disguises that truth, and we think that God serves us, agreeing with our affinities and existing to make our every wish (or, at least, most of them) come true. Yet, as we accept and actualize the reality of God's majesty - Christ's lordship - our faithfulness brings us into the wholeness that enables us to live the responsibility of creation which God entrusts to us.

John 14:23-29

Read: John 14:23-29

Read verse 26 again.

The musical, The Fantastics, gave us the song, "Try to Remember."

Try to remember the kind of Septemberwhen life was slow and oh, so mellow.Try to remember the kind of Septemberwhen grass was green and grain was yellow.Try to remember the kind of Septemberwhen you were a tender and callow fellow,Try to remember and if you remember the follow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
that no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
altho you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
without the hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
the fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow.
For faith, life, and faithful living:
  • What faithful memories are you recalling today?
  • What faithful memories will you create today?

Psalm 23

Psalm 23

Psalm 23 may be one of the best known passages in the Bible. Generations of Christians have memorized this Psalm in the King James Version:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:   he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness   for his name's sake.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,   I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;   thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:   thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:   and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Jesus often used agricultural stories in his teachings because they were easily understood by the people who worked the land and cared for the animals. In John, chapter 10, Jesus refers to himself as the 'Good Shepherd.'

For your faith, life, and faithful living:

  • How does Psalm 23 help you to understand Jesus?
  • With whom will you share Psalm 23 as a reminder of God's great love for them?
